Talk by Sebastian (Bündnis ZukunftsKlima)
at the climate strike on Apr 11, 2025- To be honest, I rarely ride a bike. Not because I don't want to – but because Würzburg is just quite bike-unfriendly.
- But a few weeks ago, I rode a bike – in a dream. I had the opposite of a nightmare. I always had the right of way. Cars braked, stopped, and were friendly. The bike paths were wide, often physically separated from the cars, safe. I felt comfortable. I have never ridden a bike as relaxed in my life as I did in this dream.
- And then I realized: This is not a dream – I am simply in the Netherlands. In Utrecht.
- And there I noticed what incredible potential we also have here in Würzburg. Würzburg needs better bike paths – not only for climate protection but also because it improves the quality of life for everyone.
- We must not forget: We can help shape this city! Not only on May 4th during the mayoral election but by making the desire for better bike infrastructure visible. But not just today.
- Did you know that 16 cyclists are legally considered one vehicle? They are allowed to ride through intersections together, even if the traffic light turns red in between. A kind of "Critical Mass"?
- And did you know that on the last Friday of every month, sometimes 16 or more people randomly meet? At 6 PM in front of the residence. With their bikes.
- The last Friday of this month is April 25th.
- So if you happen to show up on April 25th at 6 PM with your bike in front of the residence – then it could be that you coincidentally meet like-minded people. Perhaps this could make the desire for better bike infrastructure visible.
- And maybe, when this desire is visible, Würzburg will one day have as dreamy bike paths as in the Netherlands.
