Talk by Ingeborg, Anette, Miranda (Omas for Future)

at the climate strike on Feb 14, 2025

We speak for the Omas for Future, we are a nationwide movement, now with more than 80 regional groups.

Our guiding principles are:
Climate protection is not an option, but an obligation!
A clear legal framework and investment in a climate-neutral future are prerequisites for protecting the climate, nature and therefore us humans.
If we want to continue to inhabit our wonderful, fragile planet in peace and health, fundamental changes are needed, in particular a move away from the growth mania.

Climate protection is health protection:
The climate crisis jeopardises the livelihoods of all people and certainly does not stop at old age.
Older people are not a marginalised group. The 50-plus generation makes up 45% of all people in Germany and 56% of voters.
Older people and those with pre-existing illnesses are experiencing the consequences of the heat records in a very tangible way. Normal, everyday journeys become a problem; shopping, going to the doctor's surgery, visits, daily tasks at home.
All people, whether old or young, those living in poverty are particularly hard hit.
Almost one in five people in Germany is considered poor.

Climate protection is health protection.
It is in all our interests to look after our health and that of our children and grandchildren.
Acting out of love for life
The consequences of the overuse and plundering of our planet are climate change, the extinction of species, the pollution of water and air and the destruction of soil fertility. The consequences of this exploitation are an accumulation of extreme weather events such as storms, droughts, floods in the Ahr valley, in Valencia, fires such as in Greece, and most recently in Los Angeles.
The climate crisis is jeopardising our health and ultimately our very existence.
Because we are part of nature, part of this earth.
We can only exist with the earth, never against/without it.
We are being persuaded that the economy must first grow again so that we can afford sustainability and climate protection. No, it's the other way round.
Because even according to surveys by the World Economic Forum, the 4 biggest risks for the economy in the next 10 years are

  1. Extreme weather events
  2. Critical changes to the earth's systems
  3. Loss of biodiversity and the collapse of ecosystems
  4. Scarcity of natural resources

The planetary crisis is not just about reducing the destruction of nature to a tolerable level, causing less damage and having less of a negative impact. It is about having a positive impact, reversing destructive developments, e.g. reversing the sealing of soils, rewetting moors and much more.
Climate protection cannot be cancelled.
If we believe that there is not enough for everyone and a constant battle rages in which everyone is intent on getting more for themselves, this promotes fear, greed and competitive pressure.
The AfD in particular is fuelling the fears of people who are already disadvantaged and dividing society.
The super-rich pay hardly any taxes and do not make an appropriate contribution to society. A billionaires' tax would finally hold these polluters accountable - for climate protection, affordable energy and a fair society.
We need a policy of solidarity, a policy that brings people together, a policy that tackles the climate crisis with determination and a policy that promotes social justice and guarantees security of supply for all.
We are committed to a future based on solidarity, justice and ecological sustainability.
And one thing is clear: there are many of us - together we can steer the future of our country in a direction that is favourable to life and people.

Therefore (the appeal from us Omas for Future):
Go vote on 23 February.
Be sure to vote! Vote for a party that preserves and develops democracy, a party that prioritises climate protection and social justice.
We grandmas and grandpas still remember from the bitter experiences of our parents and grandparents what it was like when fascists had Germany in a stranglehold for 12 years and millions of people were murdered. Until finally Germany and Europe lay in ruins.
Never again! And never again is right now!
