Speech by Ende Gelände
at the climate strike on 24.04.2026Why is phasing out gas important? My predecessors have already explained that.
With what our government is doing, they might as well be aiming for a return to lignite.
The government (and not just ours) is actively phasing out fossil fuels. And it doesn't even make any sense. Fossil fuels are more expensive than renewable energies, they are more prone to crises, and they are weapons of war.
They are a trigger in the Ukraine war, they are the reason for the US attack on Venezuela and the US-Israeli attack on Iran, and they are being used as a weapon in the blockade against Cuba.
And instead of becoming independent of them here, where we can't extract them ourselves, hundreds of billions are being invested to be able to enforce military access to the resources if necessary.
Climate change is being ignored, the military is being heavily armed, people are being monitored, deported, or shipped off to the front lines.
And simply taking to the streets against it isn't enough. The resistance needs to become more tangible. There's no single right way to do this. But part of the answer is to stop playing by this government's rules.
We have to force the gas phase-out ourselves.
As a first step, Ende Gelände is organizing another mass action. We're coming together from all over Germany in the Ruhr area, because that's where a particularly large number of new gas-fired power plants are planned. And we're blocking gas infrastructure and militarization infrastructure there. Peacefully, with our bodies, without escalating. Because otherwise, no one else will stand in our way. It's clear that this won't stop the government from continuing to screw things up. That's why there's also a large climate camp for networking, organizing, and building power. So, from May 27th to 31st, join us in Hamm in the Ruhr area and block the fossil fuel lobby rollback.
Peacefully, with our bodies, without escalating. If that doesn't suit you, then support the next school strike against conscription on May 8th in Würzburg, block the next AfD party conference on July 4th, tell Friedrich Merz what you think when he visits Würzburg for the Catholic Days, or come to the System Change Camp in August for information, networking, and exchange.
You can find more information at ende-gelaende.org or locally on our Instagram channel eg_wue, and much of it will likely also be available from our friends at Fridays for Future.
Just standing by at demonstrations isn't enough anymore!
Let's go, let's go, Ende Gelände!
