Speech about the planned gypsum plant close to Würzburg

at the Global Climate Strike on November 14th 2025

Save our drinking water – now!
The drinking water in and around Würzburg must not be put at risk for the profits of one company.
Bavaria’s largest gypsum mine has been proposed – right in a water protection area, only 9 meters below the groundwater. That’s where the drinking water for Würzburg and many towns in the region comes from.
🤔 The revised reports change nothing:

  • The mining operation would reduce and degrade the drinking water supply for Würzburg and future generations.
  • There is no secure barrier between the groundwater and the gypsum deposits below it.
  • Lower Franconia is already a dry region and cannot handle any more water shortages.
  • Water is essential for life – gypsum is not. There are many alternatives and recycling options that Germany should have advanced long ago.
  • Noise, dust, and traffic would also endanger quality of life, health, and nature.

👉 Therefore: Send a written objection by mail to the Mining Authority in Bayreuth.
